Dundee Law School Seminars: Science as a Cultural Human Right - Helle Porsdam
Professor Helle Porsdam from the University of Copenhagen will give a Leverhulme Lecture on Science as a Cultural Human Right as follows:
Wednesday 13 October 2021
Tower D'Arcy Thompson LT
Abstract: The important role played by science and technology and the potential for dual use makes it imperative to assess scientific research and its products not only on their scientific, but also on their human rights merits. In this talk, the focus will be on the right to science, a little-known but potentially very powerful human right which is outlined in Article 27 in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and repeated in Article 15 of the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. As a cultural human right, the right to science provides a tool for opening up science to lines of inquiry emphasising ethics and prioritising human rights and human-centered considerations above commercial interests.
