This article has some interesting insights into the dispute concerning fishing rights in the North Atlantic.
The dispute mainly concerns the highly migratory herring stock population, which is the largest in the world. The heavy exploitation of this stock due to overfishing led the stock to collapse and to the cessation of all fishing from the early 1970s to the 1990s.
The fishing quotas today, are jointly managed by the Faroes Islands, Iceland, Norway, Russia and the EU under the Allanto Scandian Management Arrangements. Recently the Faroe Islands have been fishing 17% of the quota, rather than their allocated 5%.
