DILS Inaugural Lecture – A Success!

On November 5, 2013 DILS inaugural lecture was given by Professor of International Law, Robin Churchill, to a capacity audience in the CEPMLP’s Carnegie Lecture Theatre. The engaging and topical lecture on ‘The State of Play in Dispute Settlement in The Law of The Sea’ received university-wide attention, was attended by faculty and students from the Dundee Law School, the Graduate School of Natural Resources Law, Policy and Management, and the Dundee School of Humanities.

Professor Churchill presented an analysis of the dispute settlement system in the Law of The Sea and the case record since 1995. He also discussed jurisdictional and substantive issues in The Whaling Case – Australia, New Zealand (as the intervening party) v Japan pending before the ICJ, The Arctic Sunrise Case – The Netherlands v Russia pending before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) and the ITLOS’ advisory opinion on Fisheries. The lecture was followed by an engaging Q&A session that could have continued much later into the evening. Informal discussion among doctoral students and faculty was held on the role of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). While the efficacy of its dispute settlement system was in question the efficacy and success of the evening itself were not.

Once again, DILS would like to thank Professor Churchill for the fascinating and engaging presentation. We are also extremely grateful to the staff, management and faculty of the CEPMLP for having coordinated the use of the Carnegie Lecture Theatre for DILS so helpfully and for having so strongly recommended to its members their consideration of DILS’ Inaugural Event.

Our next event will be held on the 3rd of December. Its focus is “The Obstacles to Intervention (Legal and Otherwise) in the Arab Syrian Republic”.
